Stay Sane While Flying

It’s hard enough to stay sane in real life but on a flight, it’s almost impossible.

Whether it’s Jane Doe blabbing about how she’s never been to Thailand before or the one token baby that is crying so loud you regret telling your husband (or wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, partner, mom, dad- you get the picture) that you want children, flying is not the most enjoyable part of your vacations.

  1. Bring headphones! If you aren’t flying somewhere very far, like Turkey or China, there’s a good chance there won’t be any in-flight entertainment (skymall magazines are gone for good, too). You’ll thank yourself for downloading music on your phone or movies on your iPad later.

  2. Eat vegetarian (at least during your flying experience, T-Rex). The higher altitude and increased air pressure are known to diminish taste buds, so the in-flight meals try to compensate with extra salt. It’s harder to digest foods that are high in fat and sodium while flying. Take care of your body. Also, fast food like burgers or even croissants can trigger nausea. Don’t be THAT guy.

  3. Bring socks and a sweater. Even if you’re traveling to or from Arizona, planes are cold. Why risk it? If you end up being comfortable in what you’re wearing, you can always use the sweater as a pillow.

  4. Last but not least, this one is optional. Suck up to the flight attendants- bring the flight crew a box of chocolates. In the Confessions of a Flight Attendant, the woman confessing all revealed everyone greatly appreciated thoughtful flyers. It might even win you a free drink, or upgrade!
